Honesty to myself

It’s easier to say things when you know nobody is listening

Plenty of Thanks

Today was a great day.

It was a normal day, with my homework escalating, my demon-of-a-brother whining, and my parents bickering, but today was a great day because I appreciated everything a little bit more.

So, I’m thankful for this day, tomorrow, and days to come because I have the opportunity to experience great days with my friends, family, and myself.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

With love,

Joyce

"Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure or nothing."

Stumbling on Happiness

“Our desire to control is so powerful, and the feeling of being in control so rewarding, that people often act as though they can control the uncontrollable…People feel more certain that they will win a lottery if they can control the number on their ticket, and they feel more confident that they will win a dice toss if they can throw the dice themselves”

Daniel Gilbert

Something Borrowed

Yesterday night I heard Stanley Yen, Author and CEO of The Landis Group, recount a speech he made to a recent batch of college graduates. His message was this: 50% of students who are graduating won’t find jobs. Maybe more. You’ve studied all your lives, you’re graduating, and you find yourself with no where to go. If you’re desperate and lucky, maybe you’ll be able to find a low paying job. You’ll think your life is purposeless, and the fault is entirely your own. If you went to college and spent your life working for this one goal -to get a job- then, by all means, you have led a meaningless life.

If you value your life by the number of people you have influenced, by what passions you have followed through, however, then your happiness is in your own hands.

To my graduating seniors, I hope you have found value in your years here. At the end of the day, all you own is yourself and your choices. To my classmates, of whom I have a few years left with, don’t be lazy. Live your life with passion, and do something of consequence.

To a clearer future and a brighter present, with love,

Joyce

Love after love

The time will come
when, with elation
you will greet yourself arriving
at your own door, in your own mirror
and each will smile at the other’s welcome,

and say, sit here. Eat.
You will love again the stranger who was your self.
Give wine. Give bread. Give back your heart
to itself, to the stranger who has loved you

all your life, whom you ignored
for another, who knows you by heart.
Take down the love letters from the bookshelf,

the photographs, the desperate notes,
peel your own image from the mirror.
Sit. Feast on your life.
